Typically, staffing services are trained to find people to fit certain jobs; they are not trained or licensed as private investigators.
Mistakes in this process by untrained staff can lead to lawsuits.
For example if a staffer at a temp agency simply
makes a phone call and finds what they think is a criminal record
on a potential hire, they will tell you this and in all likelihood,
you will not hire that individual. However, what if you then refer
the file to a private investigator who finds that the applicants
name was misspelled by the temp agency and several errors were compounded
because of this? The result is that a potential applicant was denied
a job that he/she was qualified for. Sound impossible? Hardly. This
was an actual case in our files. It occurred in 2002. It happened
because untrained, unlicensed agents were doing work that they were
not qualified to do.
